How to Check Transmission Fluid

Transmission Fluid Change

A healthy level of transmission fluid must be maintained to keep your transmission parts well lubricated. That’s why checking your transmission fluid on schedule is a good practice to adopt.

While driving throughout Detroit your transmission is what propels your vehicle forward and prevents you from sprinting through green traffic lights and keeping you safe behind the wheel. Continue reading to learn how to check the transmission fluid in your car, how often you should check your transmission fluid, and when its time to visit Genesis Chevrolet for the service your vehicle needs.

Checking Transmission Fluid: Step-by-Step Guide

Here’s how to check transmission fluid in a few simple steps:

  1. The engine should be warm to properly check the transmission fluid level. Allow the engine to run and make sure your car is parked on a level surface to ensure an accurate reading.
  2. Locate the transmission fluid dipstick. On front-wheel-drive cars, its usually located to the right of the oil dipstick. Check your owner’s manual if you have trouble finding it.
  3. Remove the dipstick and observe the fluid left behind, it should be nearly clear, with a pink hue. If it looks dirty or gives off a burnt smell, proceed to a service center for a transmission fluid exchange.
  4. Use a rag to wipe off the dipstick. Then reinsert it into the vehicle. Pull it out again and check the level. If it’s under the “Full” marking, you’ll need to add more.
  5. Use a funnel to bring the fluid level up to the right spot. Be sure not to overfill it.

How Often Do You Check Your Transmission Fluid?

Once a month is the standard frequency you should use when it comes to checking your vehicle’s transmission fluid level. This is also the perfect opportunity to make sure all other fluids are in good standing, this includes power steering fluid and engine oil.
